Amplified Podcast: A Parent’s Journey to Leadership
🎙️ New Episode of Amplified! 🎙️
In this week’s episode of Amplified, host Britton Johnson sits down with Hear Indiana CEO Ellyn McCall for a deeply personal and inspiring conversation about the journey that shaped her life and leadership.
From Parent to Advocate
Ellyn’s story begins in 2008, when her son, Seth, was born prematurely. At just six weeks old, an auditory brain stem response (ABR) test confirmed he was profoundly deaf. By eight months, Seth had received bilateral cochlear implants, and life was forever changed.
What could have been an overwhelming diagnosis instead became a turning point. As Ellyn began navigating therapies, technology, and support systems for Seth, she quickly realized there was a critical shortage of professionals trained in Listening and Spoken Language (LSL). Determined to change that, she shifted her career path, pursuing a master’s degree and Teacher of the Deaf licensure.
A Career with Purpose
Ellyn joined Hear Indiana as its fifth employee, serving in roles from Family & Community Liaison to Listening and Spoken Language Specialist to Clinical Director before eventually becoming CEO. Her dual perspective—both as a professional and as a parent—has allowed her to connect with families in a unique and meaningful way.
Key Takeaways for Families
During the conversation, Ellyn highlights two lessons she’s carried through her journey:
-
Keep a positive or neutral outlook: A child’s hearing loss is part of who they are, not something to fear.
-
Hold on to hope: With support and intervention, “it is going to be okay.”
Why This Episode Matters
This episode is more than a personal story—it’s a reminder of the importance of early intervention, family support, and access to qualified professionals. It offers both encouragement and practical insight for families, educators, and providers working to help children with hearing loss thrive.
