Research has shown that our program significantly improves campers’ feelings of social acceptance and quality of life. Six months after camp, our campers still feel more socially accepted than they did prior to attending.

Today nearly all families that have children with hearing loss are choosing amplification and a listening and spoken language approach. That means that rather than learning sign language and attending special schools, these children are part of the hearing world. Most of these kids learn to speak as well as their typical peers. There is only one problem; these kiddos may feel alone in a world where they are neither hearing nor deaf. Our camp will always be the place where these children and teenagers can feel completely relaxed among their peers.

Our campers love participating in all the typical outdoor camp activities so much that they often do not notice the self-advocacy and leadership skills that have been embedded into each exercise. Additionally, deaf and hard of hearing mentors are integrated into our camp so that everyone has a role model for success.

When it’s not virtual due to a global pandemic, our camp is located at Happy Hollow Children’s Camp, a 900-acre Brown County camp near Nashville, IN. Campers, ages 8 – 18, will get to participate in the following activities:

  • Archery
  • Arts & Crafts
  • Canoeing
  • Challenge Course / Low Ropes
  • Fishing
  • High Ropes
  • Horseback Riding
  • Kayaking
  • Sports / Athletics
  • Swimming

We strive to ensure that no child is turned away from camp due to funding! Thanks to our generous donors and grantors we are able to keep camp costs low for everyone attending. Camp costs are outlined below:

Camp deposit: $75
In state camp fee: $625
Out of state camp fee: $925

Additionally, we offer financial assistance, including full scholarships, on a first come, first served basis. To learn more about how to apply you can begin your application and complete the financial assistance form today. Our Response to COVID-19:

Hear Indiana and Happy Hollow are committed to providing a safe camp environment for all campers. To help prepare for a safe camp season during COVID-19, the below procedures will continue to be implemented regularly:

  • Frequent and regular hand washing
  • Bleach showers and clean and disinfect sinks daily
  • Maintaining a grade-A health rating for both our camp and kitchen
  • Restricting visitors during summer
  • Eat well-balanced meals, get regular exercise and plenty of sleep
  • Work to self-screen all campers prior to camp

Additionally, during these uncertain times, we have also implemented the below procedures:

  • Campers must be fever-free for two weeks prior to arriving at camp.
  • Parents will submit a pre-camp health screening form.
  • Campers must feel well (beyond the normal first-day jitters) on opening day.
  • Campers must live in a home environment that has been free of COVID-19 for over two weeks and be medically cleared to attend.

We know that mandatory quarantines due to positive COVID-19 tests or being in direct contact with a COVID-19 positive individual is currently a reality for everyone. If at the time of camp your child has a positive COVID-19 diagnosis or is in mandatory quarantine due to exposure, Hear Indiana will offer a refund for all camp fees when a doctor’s note or a positive test result is provided.
