Drew lost his hearing as an infant in the NICU. He was diagnosed with profound deafness and auditory neuropathy. At age one, Drew received a cochlear implant. Today he is enrolled in a mainstream kindergarten program and loves to play golf.
This is 2-year-old Casha. Casha did not pass the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening test in the hospital after she was born. An audiologist confirmed that she was profoundly deaf in the first few months of life, and Casha was fitted with hearing aids. It was clear that the hearing aids were not providing Casha with enough benefit for the development of spoken language. At 12 months of age, Casha received her first cochlear implant, and six months later, her other ear was implanted. Today Casha's speech and language skills are age-appropriate.
