If You Could See What I Hear:  An Auditory Verbal Approach for Children Transitioning from Sign Language

Sarah Wainscott, M.Ed., CCC-A, LSLS Cert. AVT®

Sarah holds a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Language Pathology, a Master’s in Hearing Disorders, and Doctorate in Deaf Education.  She is certified in Audiology, Deaf Education and as an Auditory Verbal Educator.  Sarah has worked with deaf children and their families for twenty years.  Her experiences include clinical and educational audiologist, preschool teacher and early interventionist, auditory verbal therapist, program director, parent educator, and university instructor.




Abstract:

Practical strategies are presented for building listening and spoken language skills of children who sign. Examples include families of infants who use sign as a temporary support, older children in signing school programs, children with multiple disabilities, and children from culturally Deaf families. While adaptations have been made core Auditory Verbal principles guide practice with applications for home, clinic, and school. Issues of assessment, parent coaching, use of technology, developmental appropriateness, and classroom support are addressed.
